2005: New Zealand in the autumn

Reflections, Lake Matheson

In March 2007 Pat and I flew to Auckland. We took a ferry across to Tongariro Island -- a dormant volcano in Auckland Harbour, and after exploring Auckland we hired a car and worked our way down through the Rotorua district to Lake Taupo.

After our recent experiences in the Canadian Rockies we took every opportunity to explore by helicopter, so we took a two hour flight down over the Kaimanawa Forest to deliver supplies to a hunters camp, and then back over the spectacular trio of active volcanoes

After lunch we explored the "Craters of the Moon" thermal area, which had fumaroles everywhere. Next day, after we had explored Taupo we walked along the Waikato River. It was wet the next day, so we drove to Wellington, where we stayed for a few days with friends we had met in a B & B in the Grampians a year or two before.

We visited several museums in Wellington, took the cable car to the Botanic Gardens, and visited the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. Then we took a ferry to the South Island.
