Ingredient

1kg

1 pkt

Lowan rolled oats

This is a local product: the grains are relatively soft and almost fluffy. Cheaper products tend to be hard and woody.

350g

Kellogs All Bran

I used to use half a 625g packet, but I can't buy these now.

300g

1 pkt

Currants

100g

Sunflower seed

100g

Buckwheat

To add crunch

120g

Chopped almonds

85g

Half pkt

Craisins

These are chopped sweetened dried cranberries. *

125g

Half pkt

Chopped dried ginger

I use Bundaberg ginger, which is relatively mild. If you use a hotter variety you may wish to use less. * #

~ 2000g

Total

Muesli

* You can substitute, or add, almost any nuts or dried fruits. I usually add 200-300g of craisins, dried figs, ginger, mango, pawpaw or whatever is in the cupboard. A bit of variety makes life more interesting. None of the quantities are at all critical, but don't add too much sweet stuff.

# I used to be able to buy ginger chips, which didn't need to be chopped, but these have long since disappeared

Be warned that dried mango becomes like lumps of leather if you store your muesli in an open container.

Prepare all the ingredients and place in a large mixing bowl, then mix thoroughly by hand and transfer to the storage vessels. The above quantities make about 2.2 kg of Muesli, and last me about a month. I eat it with some sliced fruit, a little chopped fresh ginger, and apple juice.

I don't normally stock milk, but if there is any left over from visitors I use it (if I remember!). Otherwise if the apple juice has run out I use ginger beer.

My typical breakfast is 50-60g of muesli, 40-60g of fresh fruit (banana, strawberries, pineapple, apple, etc), 3-6g of chopped green ginger, 120g of juice, 40-50g of cheese & 1/3 apple.
