Spaced out!

Our most impressive achievements to date have been the two Voyager flights. Voyager 2 was launched on 20.8.1977. I think that the take off weight of the launch rocket was about 700 tons, and the total cost to date of the mission is about $870M - all for a capsule weighing just 774kG! Now, 40 years later, after visiting a number of planets and returning invaluable information, it is still operating - just, and travelling at about 15kM/sec.

It has travelled about 0.0017LY, and is about to leave the solar system. If it were aimed at the Southern Cross it would get there in something like 100,000 years, though we expect to lose contact with it within the next decade or so.
