Roger Riordan studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Melbourne, commencing in 1951. During his course he was resident in Trinity College, and felt that the lessons he had learnt in the College were probably more important than those he learnt at the University.

Cybec Scholarship

In 1995, when Cybec decided to donate part of its profits to charity, we started our first scholarship at Trinity. The Cybec Scholarship initially paid part of the fees for one student. It now supports several students.

Oodgeroo Scholarship

When Trinity learnt of the establishment of the Koiki Mabo Trust at Newcastle University, it was suggested that Trinity should do something similar. This led to the establishment of the Oodgeroo Scholarship, which now pays full fees for two indigenous students. The University set up a matching scholarship covering University fees, enabling the chosen students to get free tuition and accommodation.

Evan Burge Memorial Scholarship

During this period Roger developed a close friendship with the then Warden, Dr Evan Burge, and Dr Burge officiated when Pat and Roger married in the College Chapel in 2000. When, tragically, Dr Burge died not long afterwards, the College launched an appeal for a Memorial Scholarship for him, and the Foundation made an initial contribution to cover one student.

This scholarship is normally awarded to first year students for one year only

Cybec MAP Scholarship

It is part of the policy of the University of Melbourne to provide scholarships to deserving students who would not otherwise be able to attend the University, under their MAP scheme. As this is also part of the policy of the Foundation, we agreed in 2004 to fund one matching scholarship at Trinity College. The first holder is Zidi Zhao, who came from China with his parents.

Cybec Newcomers' Scholarship

We are utterly disgusted by the hypocritical and un-Christian way in which we are treating refugees from overseas. As a symbol of our disapproval, in 2005 we established two scholarships for children of refugees. One of these is the Cybec Newcomers' Scholarship at Trinity College. Generally this will pay all expenses for one deserving student.

The first holder is Ali Al Amein, from Iraq.
